Ugly Betty Looks Good

I went into the first episode of ABC's Ugly Betty expecting it to be a carbon copy of the original Colombian version Betty, La Fea. I told myself that if it wasn't then I would be disappointed. What was the result? Well, Ugly Betty is nothing like its predessesor, and I was extremely happy. While the premise is still basically the same, about an unattractive girl that lands a job as executive assistant to a womanizing executive at a fashion company, the producers have put a different spin on it. Betty is more confident in this one and is surrounded by a controlling sister, a helpful nephew, and an understanding father, replacing her more controlling father in the original. Her boss, played by hottie Eric Mabius, remains almost true to the original regarding his womanizing ways and his ultimate dependence on Betty's skills. Gone are her group of friends "El Cuartel de Feas" (The Group of the Ugly) that were her allies in the company and defended her in the original. A welcome addition is Vanessa Williams as Wilhemina, the villain of the story, intent on bringing down Daniel and Betty. What remains to be seen is if they will incorporate the original's storylines where Betty ends up owning the company, Daniel ends up falling in love with her, and Betty becoming beautiful. Since this is a weekly series that can run for many seasons, I guess only time will tell. For now, I really like the writing and style of the show. It is a welcome difference from other shows out there that are copies of one another. This one is a keeper.
