Mixed Feelings on Heroes

I was eagerly awaiting last night's episode of Heroes so much that I actually wanted the weekend to go by. I was so happy once Monday night finally came, expecting a huge showdown between Claire, Peter, and Sylar. After I watched I was originally left with this thought: That's it?

I guess I was initially letdown because the whole Sylar/Peter/Claire showdown had the potential to be awesome. It did start off great with Sylar killing the super annoying Jackie, thinking she was Claire. Then, his throwing of Claire against the wall and watching her heal herself. Then, it mostly involved a slasher movie-esque scene with Peter and Claire running from a slow-walking, Michael Myers-like Sylar. Then some locker doors were thrown. Then, Peter pulls himself and Sylar off the stairs (or bleachers?) down to the pavement. That's it.

After I thought "That's it?", I realized a few things and then thought "ohh yeah". I realized we are only nine episodes into a brand new show and that my expectations of a monumental battle were unrealistic. Those battles are normally saved for season finales. I guess we should blame NBC for hyping up the "Save the Cheerleader, Save the World" storyline. I then changed my mind and decided that the episode was great. The episode was not the conclusion but rather the beginning. The storyline was in fact only partially fulfilled. This episode only solved half of it. Peter did save the cheerleader and now we have to see how that goes into saving the world. I also realized these people don't have complete mastery of their powers so we won't be seeing any full-fledged battles yet, hence all the running. What this episode did do was allow Claire to start to accept herself and her powers.

So, Peter got arrested and Sylar got away — almost. Eden used her Jedi mind trick to slow him down, and then the Haitian put him to sleep. As it turned out, our show's powerful bad guy is much like any other guy: He can get knocked on his ass by a pretty girl whispering sweet nothings to him. But is H.R.G.'s paper factory strong enough to hold a super villain? Also, what is the siginificance of the new Isaac painting? Could it be a new Hero?

In addition to the cheerleader plotline, chapter 9, titled "Homecoming," gave us Mohinder and his dilemma again. Okay, we got it. He was at a crossroads. He had to figure out whether to follow in his father's footsteps or not. There was a message on his computer screen that read, "Do you want to quit or not?" And then the inevitable came, as Mohinder finally decided that no, he wasn't going to quit and found his father's list of people with special powers. And it's a long list. This show could potentially go on forever. At the end I figured that Mohinder's story is important because he may be the one that unites the heroes to save the world and fulfill the STC, STW storyline.

On another note, things might not last too much longer for D.L., because Jessica is pissed. She's so pissed that she went out and bought a pretty awesome rifle to take her husband out. The episode ended with Jessica aiming and D.L., who had realized she could be around and then a shot was heard. I love her storyline so much and can't wait to see what happens.

Next week looks great. As with all Heroes, it's important to know the origin story and we get that next week when we go back six months to see when and how they all discovered their powers.
