More Answers and Questions on Lost

Last night we were treated to another incredible episode of Lost, where some answers were given more questions were posed. We also had the death of another castaway.

The big mystery that this episode confirmed was whose tumor was on the X-ray: Ben's. Once that was out of the bag, Ben played the straightforward card and appealed to Jack's mercy, hoping that he would agree to a surgery that may save his life. Ben asked Jack if he believed in God and Jack just asked right back. Ben replied: ''Two days after I found out I had a fatal tumor on my spine, a spinal surgeon fell out of the sky.'' I guess that would answer Jack's question. If we dare to take that line at face value, it indicates that Ben and the Others played no role in the Oceanic crash, as some people have speculated.

We were given a brand new mystery involving the Eye-Patch Man, who skulked into view on a Pearl station monitor. Is he an Other? Does the glass eye the Tailies found in the Arrow station last season belong to him? Nikki the hot new girl had the idea to fire up the additional monitors. We also saw more of Paulo the hot new guy. His comment on the Pearl's working bathroom was funny. It seems to me as if this episode set them up to become more pivotal characters. Their couplehood definitely seems clearer now too.

Meanwhile, inside Hydra, Jack learned that Juliet's flirtation with him had been part of Ben's plan to ''break'' him. The episode's best scene was when Juliet stood behind Jack's glass wall and played a movie (To Kill a Mockingbird) that was actually a videotape of silent messages for him. As she spoke of saving Ben's life, Jack glanced at Juliet on the tape, holding up ten handwritten placards instructing him to ignore her speech, informing him that Ben is a dangerous liar, and asking him to let Ben die on the operating table, making it look like an accident. The most surprising of her cards was the one that read, ''Some of us want a change.'' It now seems as if Ben is a tyrant with disgruntled followers, or is it? A surprised Jack played along. Could this be the beginning of an alliance that brings the two groups together? Unless it is all a trick.

And now we have the death of the night. Unfortunately it was our dear Mr. Eko, a Nigerian who spent his final days on earth marooned on a tropical island where he was fatally thrashed by a menacing entity made of black smoke. I always thought his stature and that stare, made him the most intimidating of Flight 815's survivors. We learn through flashbacks that a milestone occurred when, as a young boy, he was kidnapped by gangsters who essentially baptized him into a life of crime which spared his brother Yemi from the same fate. On the island, Eko displayed a devout religious faith, but in the end, he was unrepentant for his so-called sins. His conscience haunted his final hours.

We already knew Eko was mistaken for a priest when soldiers tried stopping his small plane from taking off with smuggled heroin and Yemi on board. In new flashbacks, we learned that Eko continued acting on criminal urges, trying to sell the vaccines Yemi had procured and committing murder in Yemi's church. (On a side note, for those that followed the Lost Experience game over the summer, could those be the vaccines Mittlewerk spoke of?) Thanks to a preachy villager telling Eko that he owes Yemi one church, we now understand why Eko tried building one on the island.

I have a new theory on the smoke monster. I am thinking that the monster may in fact be a devious shape shifter. Locke had described it as a beautiful bright light, which isn't true. It would also explain the visions several castaways have had like Jack seeing his father, Hurley seeing Dave, Eko seeing Yemi, and Kate seeing the horse, which also make the monster a mind-reader. Oh well, anyway you look at it, thate damn monster killed our poor Eko. It seems to me like people die once they hit certain milestones, like Eko did in realizing that he has no reason to be sorry for his actions. Makes you think. Anyway, I'll miss Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje. He was one of the superior actors on the show. As Locke would say, he was a sacrifice the island demanded.

Next week, I am sad to see that we have the Fall Season Finale. However, it looks to be a big one.
