Here are three pieces of crazy, stupid news from around the world:
FLORENCE, S.C. - A small town police chief has been charged with stealing a windshield from a golf cart -- while wearing his uniform. Police Chief Mike McDonald of Lamar turned himself in to police on Tuesday to face the charges of larceny and misconduct in office. He was released on $1,000 bail. "I messed up, your honor," McDonald said at his bond hearing. "It's embarrassing for my position."
"I know the news media is here, and they're going to have a field day with it," the chief said.
McDonald was in uniform when he took the windshield from a golf cart at a used car lot in Darlington in August, Darlington Police Lt. Danny Watson said. An employee said the cart was chained to a pole when the windshield was taken. McDonald did not give investigators any explanation, Watson said. McDonald returned the windshield, valued at $80, authorities said. The town, about 20 miles from Florence in northeastern South Carolina, placed him on administrative leave, Mayor Bobby Hudson said.
SYDNEY, Australia - A 22-year-old man attempted to drive 310 miles in reverse on a remote Outback highway after his transmission failed, blocking his forward gears, police said Friday. The man was stopped by Western Australia state police on Thursday afternoon after they spotted his car roaring in reverse down the highway at about 40 mph, according to a statement.
He was en route to the state capital, Perth, when his transmission failed outside a restaurant in the Outback town of Kalgoorlie, about 300 miles away, according to media reports.
Rather than call a mechanic, the man opted to continue driving, in reverse.
Police said they stopped the man, whose identity was not immediately released, outside the nearby town of Coolgardie, about 12 miles from where his backward journey began. A breath test for alcohol proved negative, but the man was charged with reckless driving and other traffic offenses, police said. He was ordered to appear before the Coolgardie Magistrates Court on Monday.
FORT MITCHELL, Ky. - A northern Kentucky man wearing only a thong and carrying a knife allegedly videotaped himself attempting a burglary, then left the tape behind, police said.
That evidence ultimately led to his arrest, Fort Mitchell Police Chief Steve Hensley said.
Rodney McMillen, 36, of Covington was charged over the weekend with first-degree burglary.
"This is a very, very bizarre case, to say the least," Hensley said.
McMillen allegedly broke into a woman's apartment about 3 a.m. EDT on Sept. 20, clad in only thong underwear and carrying a knife, Hensley said. The woman fended off the attacker, who left the apartment and fled into a stand of trees near the apartment complex, Hensley said.
Investigating officers found a video camera the burglar left in the apartment, Hensley said, and found video of McMillen's family on the end of the tape, Hensley said.
Investigators were able to identify some of them and tracked down McMillen at his mother's house in Norwood, Ohio, Hensley said. McMillen was lodged in the Hamilton County Justice Center in Cincinnati on $50,000 bond, awaiting extradition to Kentucky.
