Veronica Back in Action

Finally, Veronica Mars got me into its first ongoing mystery of the season. I guess they read my complaint last week because this week, the Hearst rapist mystery was front and center. This episode was by far the best of the young season.

I felt bad for Logan because it was another hard week for him. First he had to have dinner with Veronica's dad, which was awkward and uncomfortable for them but fun to watch. Then he met someone who he thought was his half brother, Charlie Stone, after some super-sleuthing by Veronica. Unfortunately, this ''Charlie'' ended up being a fake. He turned out to be a Vanity Fair writer looking for inside dirt on the Echolls family. They discovered this after Logan put himself out there and bonded with the guy. It really was great to see Logan punch the reporter out on the beach. The emotionally drained Logan sadly continued to leave voice-mails for the real Charlie, to no avail.

My one complaint this week is the lack of other characters. There was no Piz or Mac and Wallace was limited to one brief but pointless library scene. Instead, other non-Veronica action focused on her dad's latest case. Keith was hired by Harmony, a wife who was suspicious of her husband. Both actors were on the NBC show Just Shoot Me so they had instant chemistry. Harmony did seem a bit needy, but she thought her husband was cheating on her. If her marriage doesn't work out, Keith has been needing another love interest since things blew up with Wallace's mom. I'm definately rooting for these too. I loved their scenes together.

Back at Hearst, where the rape mystery is still swirling and the victims are pointing fingers at frat boys, Veronica was determined to crack the case. In a twist, she was hired by the Pi Sigs to restore their "good name." While she originally intended to use the opportunity to dig up dirt on the frat, she ended up proving that none of the brothers actually committed the latest crime. Hilariously, she went investigating in a boring pants suit, telling her dad, with a patented Veronica deadpan, ''Bland is the new hot.'' I'm feeling much more invested in the mystery now. Now since the frat boys seem to be out of the running, who else could the rapist be? Could it be the guy from the ATM photo? What is the other common denominator among all the girls who have been raped, besides being female and going to Hearst?

Next week we get a Halloween episode that looks to be great. Hopefully we also get some more clues.
