Betty Goes Four for Four

Ugly Betty gave us its best episode yet last night. It mixed comdey, drama, and mystery all in one enjoyable hour. I also finally got invested into the central mystery regarding Fey's "death." I never cared much about Bradford, Fey, or the mystery itself until last night that Daniel and Betty became involved. We also saw a hilarious, and I hope continuous, alliance between Betty, Marc, and Amanda.

The episode got off to a great start with Betty, Marc, and Amanda attending a networking party. There, she meets Carlos (played by hottie Nicholas Gonzalez) who works for a rival magazine. The next day, Daniel and Wilhemina discover that magazine has stolen their post-apocalyptic Christmas spread idea. The hunt begins for the leak and Betty teams with Marc and Amanda to cover up the accidental exposures they made. Meanwhile, Justin, Betty's uh "questionable" nephew is doing a school project and visiting Mode. We do later find out there was no project and he just wanted to be there because he loves the fashion world.

On the mystery side, we see a music box being taken by Fey in the beginning. Bradford is furiously looking for it. Meanwhile, Fey keeps calling Daniel's office, giving Betty strange, nonsensical messages about the truth being in the music box. Bradford also interrogated her on the street about the calls. The music box turns up in Daniel's office. He opens it and sees Fey's name on it. He then tells Betty how when he was younger, his father had given his mother the same box for Christmas. However, she later hid it in the attic because she discovered he had given one to Fey, who was his mistress. Betty then opens the top of the box to discover part of a burnt licensce plate and Fey's burnt sunglasses. Mysterious stares are exchanged.

Meanwhile, afraid they may lose their jobs, poor Amanda is reduced to eating everything in sight and Marc can't be without his inhaler. I would have to say that these two characters are the funniest ones on the show. They made a great team with Betty and I hope for future alliances. It was hilarious having them visit Betty's "flea market chic" house and devour her flan. Their characters are just irresistable and I can't wait to see them on screen. Same thing goes to little Justin.

During the climactic photo shoot, Daniel breaks out his Mom's music box, making it a central piece of the shoot. Bradford sees this and he and Daniel exchange glares. This is to Wilhemina's delight who declares ''Snow is a magical blanket — it hides what's ugly and makes everything beautiful.'' It wasn't clear what she meant. Was she admiring Betty's work while putting her down or directing it at the guys? Either way Vanessa Williams plays Wilhemina so well anything sounds like an insult.

Every actor on the show deserves an A. They play their roles so well. I also love the balance between the drama and the comedy and I'm surprised it works so well. Next week, it's halloween and Marc dresses up as Betty!
